Vale Bevan Ramsden, an inspirational peace activist

It is with great sadness that we share the news about the passing of Bevan Ramsden on 27 July 2026.

Reproduced below is a tribute to Bevan published by the Independent and Peaceful Australia Network (IPAN).

It covers many aspects of Bevan’s life, including his involvement in the movement against the Vietnam War and conscription and his co-founding of Melbourne’s community radio station 3CR. He later became a regular guest and contributor to 3CR programs, especially Alternative News and Tuesday Hometime.

Notable as well was his determined pursuit of an independent, peaceful and sustainable Australia. For many years he was a vocal critic of the U.S. military alliance and U.S. military bases in Australia, especially through IPAN where he served as a member of the network’s coordinating committee.  Continue reading Vale Bevan Ramsden, an inspirational peace activist

John Butcher Obituary: 09.03.1943 – 26.01.2025

John Butcher passed away peacefully on Invasion Day 2025 following a long illness. He is survived by his partner Julie, his son Ben, Ben’s partner Sylvie, and his brother and sister Peter and Marie.

John was a tireless advocate and activist for peace, social justice and the environment.

In particular, John was for many years an active member of the Cooks River Valley Association (CRVA) and its president for seven years (2012–2018).

Many important initiatives were undertaken by the CRVA under John’s leadership. These included the annual Candles on the River event, the container deposit scheme campaign, the Non-Swimming Carnival and the CRVA water testing program.  Continue reading John Butcher Obituary: 09.03.1943 – 26.01.2025
