Statement and letter on Gaza and the ceasefire

292192_345x230[1]Marrickville Peace Group is utterly dismayed by events taking place in the Gaza strip. A statement issued by the group can be viewed here.

Jo Errey, a member of the group, has written a letter to the Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) drawing attention to the ceasefire conditions sought by Hamas. Details of these ten conditions can be found here. (The SMH failed to publish Jo’s letter).

Update: The photo above shows part of the extensive damaged caused by Israeli’s bombing of Gaza in July and August 2014. Casualties included between 2,140 and 2,310 Gazans killed (including 513 children) and between 10,626 and 10,895 wounded. The UN reported that 69–75% of the Palestinian casualties were civilians.

On 5 August, the UN’s Office for the Co-ordination for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimated that 520,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip (approximately 30% of its population) had been displaced, of whom 485,000 needed emergency food assistance and 273,000 were taking shelter in 90 UN-run schools.

As with previous military campaigns of this type, the underlying cause of the conflict is Israel’s criminal occupation of the Palestinian Territories and their programs to reduce Palestinian life to bare survival in Gaza, along with the restriction of Palestinians to unviable cantons in the West Bank, all in gross violation of international law and explicit Security Council resolutions.

See Occupied Palestine for additional photos of Israel’s barbaric ‘Operation Protective Edge’ campaign.
